Residentie Britse ambassade, Den Haag

A representative garden for a modern ambassador’s family
Project: 2014
Locatie: The Hague
Categorie: Privé tuinen

At the request of the British ambassador and his wife, Sir Geoffrey and Mary Emma Adams, I made a masterplan for the slightly jaded looking garden of the beautifully renovated 19th century villa residence in The Hague. With respect for the existing garden plan and the required features I added a new enlarged spectacular double perennial border enriched with flowering shrubs, annuals and a massive planting of spring and summer bulbs. The borders are inspired by the exuberant colors and plants from the beautiful flower still lifes in the nearby Mauritshuis.

Because the residence (and the garden) are often used for formal occasions and garden parties (with Pimm’s!) it is now possible to harvest cut flowers from the garden for beautiful homemade flower arrangements. Several seating areas were created for informal business meetings.

But the garden is also the domain of the ambassadors’ family and their beloved black labrador: much room is made for outdoor games, including football and croquet. Mary Emma is dedicated to the flower borders which she maintains lovingly. Together we planted many bulbs and the quintessential British cutflowers: sweet peas.

A new strip of woodland with special trees and shrub species was planted to mask the massive new building of the hotel next door and provides for the the necessary privacy. At various locations large drifts of naturalizing spring bulbs are planted in unusual combinations.
